Comparing Top Load, Front Load, and HE Efficiency Washers

We keep our washing machine repair techs up to date on all the latest washing machine models.

ComparingLaundry technology has come a long way since the wringer washers and washboards our grandparents may have used. Today you have many choices in washing machines. Here’s a brief overview of the three main types of washers on the market today.

Top Load Washing Machines

Top load washing machines are the kind of washer that most of today’s younger generation grew up on. In these washers, a center pole or agitator helps move the clothes around in the wash basket and generate suds. For many people, this type of washing machine just seems to make more sense because they assume clothes get cleaner if they actually soak in water. Top load washing machines are valued for their durability and longevity. If you need a large capacity washing machine for washing big loads or lots of blankets you will probably want a top loader.

Front Load Washing Machines

Front load washers were the next generation after top loaders. Their wash baskets are set on their sides so that they can use gravity to pass water and soap through the fabric of clothes as the basket spins. The biggest benefit of this technology is that it saves a lot of water instead of having to fill the wash basket completely on each cycle, it ends up filling only about one third full. Front load machines cost more than the work horse top loaders up front, but you can save money on water and detergent costs. If you value efficiency and environmental friendliness, you may want to spend the extra bucks on a front loader. Front loaders are also stackable making them ideal for homes and apartments with limited floor space.

High Efficiency Washing Machines

High efficiency washers strive to combine the best of front load and top load machines. You get the same trusted shape as a top loader, but you can actually pack more clothes inside because there’s usually no agitator hogging space. The wash basket spins much faster than a regular top loader which helps save energy on drying. You also end up using less detergent and water with a high efficiency machine just as you would with a front loader. One thing to note is that if you choose this type of washer, you will have to buy special detergent for it if you want your clothes to actually get clean.
