Since 1905, GE has been a trusted name in the household appliance business. Now, the company is selling its dominant brand name to Electrolux, a high-end Swedish appliance company. Electrolux has agreed to pay $3.3 billion for GE’s appliance business and will continue to use the GE brand name for 40-something years.
GE is so wedded to appliances in the American mind that you may not realize appliances are no longer the company’s core business. GE’s desire to help consumers afford appliances in the wake of the great depression resulted in the formation of GE Credit Corp., and from there the company continued to grow its finance holdings. Today GE is also heavily invested in aviation and energy and the complicated machinery that go along with them.
GE appliances are still selling well, with $5.7 billion in revenue and $381 million in profit last year from the appliance and lighting division. However, these figures were dwarfed by other sectors contributing to GE’s total annual revenue of $146 billion.
Typically, when a brand gets sold the new owners don’t make any drastic changes. After all, they bought the brand and the product line for a reason.
