Smelly Washer? Here’s a Quick Fix!If you’re hosting Thanksgiving or Christmas this year, your preparations are probably well underway. But there’s one thing that you should definitely take notice of that you may not have already:

Your washer and dryer!

They are going to be working in overdrive when you have an extra smattering of family and friends staying with you for the holidays, so it’s best to get it in tip-top working condition now, before the holiday rush really starts getting into full swing.

We at American Appliance Repair are Southern California’s favorite home appliance repair company, so feel free to call us anytime you need service at 800-640-9934. We’ll be happy to schedule an appointment at your earliest convenience and get your home appliance working optimally in no time.

Now for today’s home appliance Q&A:

Question: What should I do if my washer smells bad?

Answer: You likely have a mildew situation going on. Gross! Mildew has a strong odor that absolutely cannot be ignored, it’s so strong.

But don’t worry! There is a way to fix it quickly so you can continue using your washer normally.

Your best course of action is to pour a cup of white vinegar into your washer, run it for a complete cycle, and then leave the door open to let it dry naturally. The vinegar will naturally and safely kill any and all mildew in your washer. Then run a load of laundry as you normally would, with detergent and about a cup of baking soda as well. This will give your washer and your clothes an extra layer of freshness, leaving you with nothing to worry about the next time you use your washer again, which in many families, let’s face it, is the very next day!

Preventing mildew in the future

Also, make sure you set a timer on your phone or computer to remind yourself to remove wet clothes promptly from your washer so you don’t continue to experience mildew problems. It only takes a minute or two, so it won’t interrupt your day that much, and you won’t have to deal with nasty odors later. Also, when you remove your clothes from your washer, make sure you leave the door slightly ajar so air can pass freely in and out of your washer. Mildew grows when the washer remains wet after a load is run, but leaving the door slightly open will allow it to air dry naturally.
