Do You Know How to Take Care of Your Older Top-Loading Washing Machine?

Do You Know How to Take Care of Your Older Top-Loading Washing Machine?

It is common for a person to move into a new home and get the washer and dryer that came with it. In these cases, they often do not know how to properly care for their appliances. At American Appliance Repair we can always provide ongoing maintenance but you can complete a few steps on your own. Keep reading to learn about them and then contact us at 800-640-9934 with additional questions.

Make Sure the Washer Position is Secured

First, make sure that your washing machine is not scraping against anything near it, and that it is not “walking” when it is working. When it is running, it might shake for a number of reasons but in most instances you will start from the ground up to find the issue. Look at the feet. Use your bubble level and adjust them if they are not level. If they have debris on them or are slick, then you might need to clean them and then add non-slip foam to prevent issues in the future.

You Might Need Vibration Pads or a Drape Blanket

If you have a washer that vibrates regularly, and sounds as though it is rattling or clacking each time it is run, then you might need to invest in vibration padding too. This can keep it from shaking against something else. This keeps it safe, in place, and can be a permanent solution to vibrating issues.

Wipe Down Your Machine Regularly

Most people would assume that keeping their washer cleaned up is just important for the way it looks. In fact, it is also important to maintain. If your machine is clean, then you can more clearly see if there is an issue. It can also help to assure that all moving and stationary parts do not come down covered in gunk that will prevent them from working well. Wipe the top down to remove any detergent or other debris on it.

Balance Your Loads in a Circular Pattern

When you fill up your washer with laundry, make sure you are taking the weight distribution of the drum into consideration. You do not want one side to be unbalanced or the spin can be thrown off. The result will be scraping, clanging, and other startling sounds. Keep a close eye on bulky items like blankets and make sure you are balancing them properly.

Of course, your older washing machine isn’t going to work forever but at American Appliance Repair we can provide appliance repair to increase the lifespan of your washer. Call us now at 800-640-9934 if you need assistance.
